Autumn Term 2026
Welcome back!
Our Christian Values
During the Autumn term, our Christian values are friendship and koinonia, followed by hope and reverence in the second half of the term.
In Falcons, we all have different strengths and characteristics, and we are going to use them to help support and guide each other through our year in school. We will be there for each other and help encourage each other to make the right decisions, along with celebrating for our individual wins. Everyone will know and feel that there will always be a helping hand, words of advice or just a friendly smile when needed.

English
During our first half term, we will be studying Star of Fear, Star of Hope by Jo Hoestlandt to develop the children's writing skills. Throughout the unit, the children will explore a range of writing opportunities, including descriptive writing, letter writing and diary writing. They will build their understanding of effective language choices, audience and purpose, while developing their confidence as writers. To conclude the unit, the children will complete an independent writing task, producing a story that either includes a flashback or is written from another character's point of view.
During the second half term, we will be studying Can We Save a Tiger? by Martin Jenkins to develop the children's writing skills. Throughout the unit, the children will explore a range of writing opportunities while developing their use of a wider variety of punctuation. They will also build their understanding of how to write for different purposes and audiences. To conclude the unit, the children will complete an independent writing task, creating an information leaflet that combines explanation and persuasive writing.
Spelling
Throughout the year, we will use Pathways to Spell alongside Grammarsaurus to develop the children's spelling knowledge and strategies. The children will learn a range of spelling rules and patterns, while also practising the Year 5/6 statutory spelling list.
Maths
This year, we will be following the White Rose Maths scheme of learning. During the Autumn Term, Year 5 will focus on place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and fractions. Year 6 will focus on place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and converting units.
As mathematicians, the children will develop their understanding through a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach, enabling them to build confidence and fluency in their mathematical thinking. They will be encouraged to explain and justify their reasoning, apply their knowledge to solve worded and multi-step problems, and develop resilience when tackling challenging mathematical tasks.
Science
During the Autumn Term, the children will explore enquiry skills. They will learn to ask questions, make predictions, carry out two exciting science topics. In Autumn 1, they will study Evolution and Inheritance, developing their understanding of how living things have adapted and changed over time. In Autumn 2, they will learn about Living Things and Their Habitats, investigating how organisms are classified and how they are suited to the environments in which they live.
As scientists, the children will develop their scientific knowledge and understanding while building key enquiry skills. They will learn to ask questions, make predictions, carry out investigations, take accurate measurements, record and present their findings, and draw conclusions using scientific evidence.
History
As historians, we will explore the key enquiry question: Raiders or settlers – how should we remember the Vikings? Throughout the unit, the children will investigate how the Vikings have influenced our lives today. They will explore the challenges the Vikings faced when establishing settlements, compare the lives of the Vikings and the Anglo-Saxons, examine their beliefs and religion, and discover aspects of Viking and Anglo-Saxon life that continue to influence us today.
RE
We will be using Questful RE scheme of work.
During the first half term, the children will explore the big question: Life as a journey- Is ever person’s journey the same? They will consider how different faiths and beliefs view life's journey and reflect on what gives life meaning and purpose.
In the second half term, the children will investigate the question: How do our celebrations reflect the true meaning of Christmas? They will explore the Christian understanding of Christmas and consider how its message is reflected in the ways people celebrate today
Art
As artists, the children will explore tone, form, proportion and realism while developing their skills through both individual and collaborative work, including creating artwork on a larger scale. Linking with our History topic on the Vikings, they will investigate Viking symbols and motifs before designing and creating their own. Throughout the term, the children will refine a range of artistic techniques, including shading, highlighting and tinting, while learning to evaluate and improve their work by considering questions such as, 'How much is too much?'
DT
As designers, we will be focusing mechanisms. We are lucky to have Mrs Raynor teaching Flacons for this lesson.
PHSE
Our first half-term topic is Healthy Me. The children will explore ways to support their emotional and mental wellbeing, including recognising and managing stress and developing healthy coping strategies. They will also learn about medicines and drugs, understanding the difference between substances that are used safely to help people and those that can be harmful if misused.
During the second half term, the children will focus on financial education. They will develop an understanding of budgeting, managing money responsibly and why these are important life skills.
We will also have focused time on our British Values: democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs as well as the nine protected characteristics.
Music
We will be using Charanga scheme of work.
As musicians, we will be exploring different musical styles and different sounds. For the first half term, our focus song will by Happy. For the second half term our theme is Jazz.
MFL
As linguists, the children will continue to develop their French skills with Madame Carter during our Tuesday morning lessons. In Autumn 1, Falcons will focus on the topic of school and subjects, developing their vocabulary and confidence in communicating about their experiences. During the second half term, they will move on to the topic of the city, expanding their language skills by learning new vocabulary and phrases linked to places and locations.
Homework
Homework will be sent home on Fridays and should be returned by the following Wednesday. We expect each piece of homework to take approximately 20 minutes to complete. If your child experiences any difficulties, please feel free to speak to myself or Mrs Armstrong or you can add a note to the work so that we can provide support where needed.
General information
- Please tie up long hair.
- Please have a bottle of water at school every day. This can be refilled as necessary.
- Please bring a small school bag.
- Please return your homework book on or before Wednesday for marking. Homework will be sent out on a Friday.
- All school uniform needs to be named but particularly jumpers and cardigans.
PE is timetabled for Wednesday afternoons and will be outside whenever possible. In cold weather, please add a jumper, trousers and gloves as we will still go outside. Should it be sunny, please add sun hats and suncream if needed.
