Autumn Term 2025
Welcome back!
Our Christian Values
During the Autumn term, our Christian values are friendship, thankfulness and koinonia, followed by hope and reverence in the second half of the term.
In Falcons, we all have different strengths and characteristics, and we are going to use them to help support and guide each other through our year in school. We will be there for each other and help encourage each other to make the right decisions, along with celebrating for our individual wins. Everyone will know and feel that there will always be a helping hand, words of advice or just a friendly smile when needed.
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” – Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing”- Thessalonians 5:11
Our class novel for Autumn 1 is ‘The Boy who Swam with Piranhas’ by David Almond.
Our class novel for Autumn 2 is ‘Hansel and Gretel’ by Neil Gaiman.
English
In our first half term we will be using the text 'Queen of the Falls’ by Chris Van Allsburg to develop our writing skills. We will work on descriptive setting pieces, active and passive voice, using show not tell techniques before ending with our independent piece. This piece will focus on writing a diary entry.
In our second half term we will be using the text ‘The Lost Happy Endings’ by Carol Ann Duffy and Jane Ray. We will work on different skills that lead us to writing a traditional tale focusing on describing settings, characters and an alternative ending.
Spelling
We will continue to use Pathways to Spell as part of our English lessons to develop spelling strategies and learn spelling rules, as well as the Y5/6 common exception words.
Maths
We are continuing to use and follow White Rose Maths. During the Autumn term we will focus on place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
As mathematicians, the children will learn through concrete experiences moving onto pictorial and abstract methods as their confidence builds. They will also be expected to use their learning to reason about maths and solve problems.
Science
For this term we are focusing on living things and their habitats, classification and life cycles. As scientists, we aim to develop our knowledge and understanding, scientific skills and measuring and recording abilities.
History and Geography
As historians, this Autumn, along with the whole school, we will be exploring 175 years of Kingsley St. John's. This promises to be a fascinating project as we explore the many changes both locally and worldwide over this period, and their influence on our community.
RE
For RE we will continue to use the Questful RE planning. For the first half term we will be focusing on the big question of ‘How and why do Christians read the bible?’ and ‘Why are sacred texts so important to people of faith?’.
During the second half term we will focus on ‘How do Christians prepare for Christmas?’.
PE
During Autumn term, Falcons and Year 4 will be taking part in their swimming lessons on a Tuesday afternoon. There will be other opportunities throughout the week for the children to do some exercise and be moving.
Art
As artists, we will be focusing on street art and think about the differences between graffiti and street art. We will also have a focus on the artist Shamsia Hassani.
DT
As designers, we will be working on moving toys.
PHSE
For the first half term, we are going to be focusing on healthy friendships and what skills and qualities we want in our friends and ourselves in order to be there for our friends.
For the second half term, we are going to be focusing on our carer paths.
We will also have focused time on our British Values: democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs as well as the nine protected characteristics.
Music
As musicians, we will be using Charanga to explore musical styles and different sounds.
MFL
As linguists, we will continue to have Madame Carter on Wednesday morning to deliver our French lessons.
Homework
Homework will be sent out on Friday to be returned on or before the following Wednesday. We expect each piece to take about 20 minutes. Please come and see us if there are any difficulties or write a note on the piece of work.
